Our Morepork/Ruru Parents

One warm evening on our property we experienced an unexpected surprise. Hearing the numerous wax eyes and black birds calling to each other in loud voices we looked up to see a pair of Ruru/Morepork in one of the palms outside our backdoor

These special native owls, with their distinctive "more-pork" call echoing through the trees, captivated our senses and left an indelible mark on our hearts.

As dusk settled, we watched them flying through the trees completely silently, silhouetted against the fading sky.

Their large eyes gleamed with curiosity as they perched on a branch, observing their surroundings with a quiet wisdom that felt almost surreal.

Our property bordered by large trees, is a sanctuary for many species of birds.

Five years later the Morepork/Ruru parents are still here and we always feel privileged to witness them in their natural habitat. They remind us of the importance of preserving biodiversity and respecting the delicate balance of wildlife.

As we stood watching these nocturnal visitors, we couldn't help but marvel at the intricate beauty of nature. Their presence enriches our connection to the land and instills a profound sense of wonder that remains fixed in our memories.

Encountering the New Zealand Moreporks on our property for the first time was not just a sighting; it was an encounter that has deepened our appreciation for the natural world around us. It serves as a gentle reminder of how fortunate we are to share our space with such magnificent creatures and inspires us to continue fostering a harmonious coexistence with all living beings.

Known for their nocturnal habits and keen hunting skills, Moreporks also know as Ruru play a vital role in New Zealand's ecosystem. They are revered in Maori culture, often symbolizing guardianship and spiritual guidance.

Our wish is to give people the opportunity to have a reminder of these wonderful birds.

Fridge magnets seemed to be the least expensive and most durable way to share our images. We hope these fridge magnets can serve as a daily reminder to protect our special New Zealand environment.
